Getting Started

Grade Level: 8-12

Lesson Topic: Critical Thinking & Problem Solving

Lesson Category: Employability Skills

Lesson Summary: Students will practice critical thinking and problem-solving skills through realistic, everyday scenarios they may encounter in school, work, and personal life.

Navigator Tool: Notes, Documents, My Portfolio

Resources Needed: Student tablets or computers, notebook or collaborative digital document.

Lesson Goals/Objectives:

• Clearly define a problem and identify relevant information.

• Apply critical thinking to select and justify a solution.

• Explain how problem-solving skills apply across school, work, and everyday life.

Lesson Starter (10 min):

Present students with a relatable scenario, such as: “You have limited time

after school and must choose between work, extracurricular activities, and personal responsibilities.”

Students discuss what makes the decision difficult and what information they would need. Introduce critical thinking as the process of evaluating options and consequences before acting.

Engagement Activity (Time projected):

1. Students are given an everyday-life problem scenario (individually or in groups), such as:

o Choosing classes or electives for next year

o Deciding how to manage time between school, work, and personal life

o Evaluating whether to take a part-time job

o Resolving a group or team conflict

2. Students identify the core problem and list at least two possible solutions.

3. Using a decision-making worksheet, students analyze each option by identifying:

o Benefits and drawbacks

o Skills or resources needed

o Possible challenges or risks

o Short- and long-term consequences

4. Students select the best solution and write a brief justification explaining their reasoning.

(Optional) Students may reference personal interests or strengths from Kuder Navigator to support their decision.

Lesson Closure (30 min):

Students share their chosen solution and explain the thinking process they used. Facilitate a discussion connecting this structured approach to problem solving in school, the workplace, and everyday life.

Assessment (10 min):

• Formative: Observation of student discussions and problem analysis

• Summative: Completed problem-solving worksheet or short written reflection describing the problem, options considered, and final decision comparison worksheet with a written justification for a chosen career.

Compression of Lesson:

This section provides one or two ideas to compress the lesson if less time than allotted is available.

• Use one common scenario for the entire class.

• Complete the analysis together as a guided discussion.

Extension of Lesson:

This section provides one or two ideas to extend the lesson if additional time is available.

• Students apply the same problem-solving process to a real decision they are currently facing.

• Students create a reusable step-by-step decision-making model for future situations.
