Leading Students through a Galaxy Planet

You can effectively lead your group of students through early career exploration with Galaxy by following the strategies and activities below.

Activity Preparation:

  1. Select a planet to explore

  2. Select a video from the planet to focus on with students

    1. To access videos, access your educator portal, go to student views and select the grade level and planet you want to visit

Activity 1:
Watch the video as a group and pause it occasionally to ask questions and together, discuss what you see.

  • As you watch the video, ask students to make a note of any words they hear that may be new or select words that you want to focus on for reflection. Ex: Accomplishment or Achievement

  • Repeat the new words that were introduced in the planet with this suggested script.

    • Say: I heard a word(s) that may be new to you in the video. I heard the word (say the word). Can you say that word with me? (All say it together).

    • Say: Let me hear you say it together again. (All say together again).

    • Ask: Have you heard the word ______ before?

    • Ask: What do you think that word means?

    • Ask: Can you think of an example of that word? Provide an example: If I learned to ride my bike, that would be an accomplishment.

    • Say the word as a group a couple of times so they get comfortable with it. You can say it first normal as a group and then have them say it in a deep voice, in a whisper, and even in a silly voice.

Activity 2:
Ask 2-3 prompting questions for reflection and ask students to discuss their responses in small groups.

  • What do you see in the video?

  • Did you see anything in the video that you have never seen before? Talk about anything new that they saw.

  • What tools do you see people using?

  • What kinds of clothing and helmets did you see people wearing in the video?

  • What sounds did you hear in the video? (this could be the sounds in work environment – clanging in a kitchen, construction equipment on a job site)

  • Did you see any people working together in the video? How were they working together?

Activity 3: Review "I" statements questions with students.

  • Review each of the "I" statements with students and ask for a few students to answer each of the statements.

    • Ex: Have three students share their response to the following statement: "I can explain why people get career training and different levels of education"

Suggested Activity: Independent Galaxy Exploration

  • Have students return to their workstations and work on the planet either on their own devices or partnered up if not enough devices are available.
